Lyme Bay Chardonnay 2015 (£16.69)

Devon's Lyme Bay Winery has been one of this country's most innovative drinks producers over the last 25 years with an ever-expanding portfolio of wines, ciders, fruit wines, meads and liqueurs. Wine production started relatively recently though, but in a short period of time, the company has become part of the success story of English wine. As well as sourcing grapes from a selection of top growers in the South of England, they planted their own vines in 2009/2010, releasing their inaugural 2014 vintage in 2015. With a burgeoning list of prizes in prestigious competition including the IWSC and Decanter World Wine Awards, the company is going from strength to strength, so what better way to start 2018 than with a bottle of their award-winning Chardonnay 2015!

Made from an intriguing blend of 86% Chardonnay (70% of which was fermented in oak barrels) and 14% Bacchus, this wine spent 5 months in oak post-fermentation with lees stirring. The result is a clean, dry, pale yellow-coloured white wine of 11.5% ABV that blends the floral qualities of Bacchus with the stone fruit and buttery character of Chardonnay. On the nose, aromas of tropical fruit and ripe peach with hints of white flowers and honey blend together in a fragrant ensemble, while the well-rounded palate shows similar fruity notes with a light touch of butterscotch and some citrus on the finish. This wine is great for drinking on its own, but would make an excellent pairing with many fish or chicken dishes.

Look out for more superb releases from Lyme Bay Winery in 2018!
